Asia Cup 2022: KL Rahul Would Be A Concern For India Due To His Absence From Field In Recent Times, Feels Mahela Jayawardene

Former Sri Lanka player Mahela Jayawardene feels that KL Rahul will be a concern for India during Asia Cup 2022 due to his absence from the field in recent times. The former Sri Lankan player also said that the sooner KL Rahul gets his confidence back, it is going to help the team.

India recently announced their squad for Asia Cup 2022 in which KL Rahul was named as the captain. The right-handed batsman was out of the field since the end of IPL 2022. He underwent hernia surgery and wasn’t able to play for the team due to the recovery process. He last played in IPL 2022 where he finished as the second-highest run-getter.

KL Rahul’s Lack Of Cricket Will Be A Concern For India: Mahela Jayawardene

While speaking on the latest episode of ICC Review, Mahela Jayawardene spoke about India’s squad for Asia Cup 2022. When he was asked how KL Rahul’s lack of cricket will affect India, he said it will be a concern for the team.

“That (KL Rahul’s lack of cricket) would be a concern for India. He has been out for a little while since the IPL, so having game time is quite crucial especially out there in the middle. The sooner he can get some game time and get that confidence back, is always going to help him, as well as the national team.” Jayawardene said.

While speaking about Virat Kohli, Jayawardene said that the Indian batter is a quality player and he will come out of the poor form.

“It is unfortunate what Virat is going through right now at the moment, but he is a quality player. I believe Virat has the tools to come out of it (the form slump). He has done that in the past as well and I’m sure he’ll come through this. Class is permanent and form is temporary,” Jayawardene further said.

Rohit Sharma is the skipper of India in Asia Cup 2022. The tournament begins on August 27 in UAE and India will face Pakistan in their opening game on August 28 in Dubai. India is part of group A in the tournament.

For India, players like KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja are part of the squad. Among bowlers, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Avesh Khan have been picked in the squad.
