Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria believes that Virat Kohli must score well before the T20 World Cup in October.
The eagerly anticipated Asia Cup 2022 begins on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates, and the next day Team India will face Pakistan in Dubai.
Given that Virat Kohli will be playing again after a break of more than a month, the intense match becomes even more thrilling. The forthcoming competition may be the former Indian captain’s best chance for redemption because he has been having a difficult time after hitting hundreds of runs for the nation.
Kohli, who had a reputation as a run-producing machine, has been experiencing a severe decline in his batting performance for about three years. With the world cup less than two months away, his miserable performance on the England tour has also prompted concerns about his position in the T20I setup.
At Edgbaston, Kohli scored 11 and 20 in the fifth and final Test. He was only able to score 12 runs in two innings in the T20Is, while he managed 17 and 16 runs in the three-match ODI series.
‘Kohli will need to come back with a bang’: Danish Kaneria
It will be intriguing to watch how the former captain of India fares in the continental event since he is scheduled to play again in a few weeks. Danish Kaneria, a former Pakistani spinner, stated that before the T20 World Cup in October, Kohli needs to amass strong tallies.
“If Kohli wants to be considered for the T20 World Cup, he will need to come back with a bang. He will need to perform by hook or by crook. You can’t have such huge baggage with the team and then to bench him will also be incredibly tough.
“Pakistan will hope that Kohli’s form slump continues because if he gets back his mojo, he will be dangerous,” said Kaneria on his YouTube channel.
India and Pakistan play against each other on 28th August in the Asia cup.
