Asia Cup 2022: Virat Kohli is A Quality Player And Has The Tools To Come Out Of Poor Form, Says Mahela Jayawardene

Former Sri Lanka player Mahela Jayawardene has backed Virat Kohli amid his ongoing poor form and believes that the Indian player has the ability to come out of it. Jayawardene said that Kohli has done it in the past as well.

Virat Kohli, who is going to be part of the Asia Cup 2022, has faced trouble while scoring runs this year. He has failed to come up with big knocks. He was absent from the recent ODI and T20I series against West Indies and is also not part of the forthcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe.

Class is Permanent And Form is Temporary: Mahela Jayawardene on Virat Kohli’s Form Slump

While speaking on ICC Review show, Mahela Jayawardene said that Virat Kohli will come through the form slump which he has done in the past as well.

“It is unfortunate what Virat is going through right now at the moment, but he is a quality player. I believe Virat has the tools to come out of it (the form slump). He has done that in the past as well and I’m sure he’ll come through this. Class is permanent and form is temporary,” Jayawardene said.

Jayawardene also spoke about India having Rishabh Pant as an opener.

“Even though he (Rishabh Pant) hasn’t done that (open the batting) much in domestic cricket, he has the capacity to do that. Wherever he bats, you’re not going to change his game. He is going to be a very natural player so yes, it is an option (for Pant to open)”, Jayawardene further said.

In 2022, Virat Kohli has scored runs at an average of 31+ in Tests, 21+ in ODIs, and 20+ in T20Is. He has hit 2 fifties in ODIs, one in Test and 1 in T20Is. He has not hit any centuries since November 2021.

Asia Cup 2022 is set to commence on August 28 in UAE. Rohit Sharma is going to lead India in the tournament. India will play their opening game of the tournament against Pakistan on August 28 in Dubai.
