Much-awaited India vs Australia Test Series is set to commence on 9th February. Australia is set to play Test Series after 2017 where they lost the series after being 1-0 up. This Test Series is expected to be a riveting one as both the squads are evenly matched.

The Aussies have almost qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC 2021-23) final; whereas India needs to clinch the series by 3-1 or 3-0 to stake a claim. India recently had to work hard against Bangladesh Tests as they almost lost the 2nd Test match.

Sunil Joshi on Spin Attack

Sunil Joshi was having an interaction with ESPNcricinfo and was asked about whether Kuldeep found a place in the team.

“I think so. One, because of his form – he’s been good at picking wickets. As a former cricketer, I look more closely at the way he is taking wickets: a spinner getting [the batter] out through the gate bowled, caught at slip, stumped getting to the pitch of the ball, miscuing the ball and getting caught at mid-off, mid-on. These are the areas of dismissal that a spinner would love to take,” said Sunil Joshi.

“If Ashwin is our first option, and if Jadeja is not available, then it should be Kuldeep and Axar. If Jaddu is available and they are playing three spinners, Kuldeep should play. Don’t look at the venues or whether our spinners will do well or not at them. Look at the way Kuldeep has picked up wickets,” he stated.

“In whatever series he has played recently, whether it is red- or white-ball, his dismissals are in the range of [being caught] within the 30-yard circle. That is a great thing for a bowler because it shows you have been very consistent with your line and length. If India have to win against Australia, Kuldeep will play a major part.” he added.

Conundrum for Management

It is assumed that the pitches for Border-Gavaskar Trophy would be spin-friendly where as mentioned by Sunil Joshi, Kuldeep Yadav should get a chance. The management has a strenuous task on their hands as Axar Patel can also score handy runs where he might get a nod over Kuldeep Yadav.

Skipper Rohit Sharma & Head Coach Rahul Dravid should use Kuldeep as a secret weapon. It won’t be wrong to say that India has got the upper hand going into the series as a lot of players like Travis Head, Alex Carey & co are touring India for the first time where getting used to conditions would be quite tough.
