The IND vs AUS Test series kicks off with the first Test in Nagpur on February 9. India won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the last two Test series between the two teams in 2018-19 and 2021-22. The team discovered many new heroes in the process as well.

Virat Kohli was the skipper of the side in the 2018-19 series and India won the series 2-1 winning matches in Adelaide and Melbourne. Kohli ended as the third-highest run-getter with 282 runs in four Test matches at an average of 40.29.

It was also the series where Jasprit Bumrah rose as India’s new pace spearhead. Earlier that year in 2018, Bumrah made his Test debut against South Africa, and in the series against Australia, he was a part of India’s pace bowling quartet. He ended 2018 with 48 wickets in just nine matches at 21.02 with three five-wicket hauls. He was India’s leading wicket-taker in Tests that year and fourth-best overall.

Meanwhile, Ishant Sharma, Virat Kohli‘s long-time India teammate shared an instance when Kohli was very angry with Bumrah who was still making his way into Test cricket. The veteran of 105 Test matches admitted that he was aware of Bumrah’s ability to judge any situation and his maturity as well. He recalled this incident on Cricbuzz on the first episode of ‘Rise of New India’.

Ishant Sharma Reflects On Seeing Jasprit Bumrah in 2018 Australia Tour

“I knew a day would come when Bumrah would become a leader. I remember in 2018, when we were playing a Test match in Australia and his first spell did not go well. Virat told me ‘I think I should go and speak to him’. I said ‘ He is a very smart bowler. He understands it. Usko chhor de. Usko pata hai kya karna, kya nehi karna (Leave him alone. He knows what he needs to do). In that way he is very smart. He understands the game and he understands the situation.’ When you understand the situation, especially in Test cricket, you can make a comeback very quickly,” he said.

Jasprit Bumrah ended the series with 21 wickets as India scripted a 2-1 series win. The Indian pacer was out of the Indian team with a back injury and is not expected to be a part of the team for the first IND vs AUS Test match in Nagpur. He missed the Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup last year due to his injury.
