India’s bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar joined Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, ruling himself out of the England tour. Washington Sundar, like Avesh Khan, sustained a finger injury while playing for the County Select XI against India in the practice game in Durham. Both of them played for the County Select XI as ECB requested reinforcements, while Sundar’s injury details are yet to come out.

Washington Sundar made his Test debut in the tour of Australia last year and has impressed with both bat and ball. The southpaw has so far taken six wickets at 49.83 and averages 66.25 with the bat, scoring 265 runs. The 21-year old was one of the spin-bowlers selected in the tour along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel. However, he will return home without coming under consideration.

He batted once in the practice match, scoring a single before Mohammed Siraj removed him. Opener Shubman Gill has already returned home as the strain on his left leg forced him to miss the series. The youngster had already been in doubt and did not play the warm-up game against the County Select XI. Mayank Agarwal would most likely be Rohit Sharma’s opening partner.

BCCI yet to take a call on Washington Sundar’s replacement:

Meanwhile, it would be interesting to see whether the BCCI allows a replacement player for Washington Sundar for the five-match Test series against England. The board had already denied any replacement for Gill after rumours suggested that Prithvi Shaw might fly to England from Sri Lanka to return to the whites.
