Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell was speculated to be forced into retirement; however, the premier all-rounder has finally revealed the main reason for calling it quits in one of the biggest leagues of world cricket.

Renowned West Indies all-rounder and one of the greatest T20 players by global standards, Andre Russell, announced his retirement from the IPL. The 37-year-old, who may not have had a promising last season, was released by the Knight Riders, but he was confirmed to secure another deal in the mini-auction.

Despite the anticipation around him after his release, Russell decided to call it quits on the IPL. He, however, continues to play franchise cricket throughout several other leagues across different nations. Moreover, he would still be seen in KKR shirts, as he has joined them as a power coach and consultant.

Andre Russell reveals the reality behind his IPL retirement

Several questions were raised when Andre Russell decided not to enlist himself in the IPL auction list and instead announced his retirement from the premier competition. After much of the speculation, Russell has finally revealed the real reason behind this tough call.

“It is based on the number of games and the travel. You have to make sure that you recover as well as possible to stay fresh and manage your body, manage practice sessions and your workload in the gym. You definitely need to practise, you need to hit the gym, but also make sure not to do too much,” Russell told Cricbuzz.

“With a big league like the IPL, it's always challenging for me as an all-rounder. And I can only speak on behalf of myself, because to bat, bowl and then make sure that you do some catching and fielding stuff - it's always challenging. I just think this league is so big that you always want to make sure that your best performance is always at hand,” he added.

Andre Russell is against specialist roles in T20 cricket

To contradict the above-mentioned reason, many might opine that Russell could have limited his role to batting in the KKR setup, which would have prolonged his stay in the IPL. But the West Indies all-rounder never opted to perform just one specialist role of a batter.

“I have never thought about that, because I think my batting complements my bowling and my bowling complements my batting. I always look forward to bowling at least two overs in a game. I think if I'm bowling well, then my batting will automatically flow, and that's very important for me,” said Russell.

“If I were just a batter from the beginning of my career, then I would maybe think along those lines in terms of my career and everything, but I couldn't see myself playing as just an impact player or batting only and smashing sixes. I have to be fair to what I enjoy doing, which is batting and bowling both,” he added.

Russell's record over the years in the IPL

Andre Russell has an exceptional record in the IPL. Having made his debut for KKR back in 2014, he won a title with them in the very first season. He stayed and played with the Kolkata Knight Riders for 12 seasons and witnessed three finals for them.

The first final was in 2014, followed by the second in 2021, and then lastly in 2024. All three finals came under three different skippers, Gautam Gambhir, Eoin Morgan, and Shreyas Iyer, respectively, but the two West Indian giants, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, remained constant over the years.

In 140 IPL games, Russell amassed 2651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18, which is still a record for players to have played 1000+ balls in the tournament. He also picked 123 wickets in the IPL with best figures of 5/15.
