Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has expressed his disappointment over his England counterpart Brendon McCullum saying the teams wouldn’t be sharing a beer anytime soon.
The former New Zealand skipper made the comments after Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal on day five of the recently-concluded second Ashes Test at Lord’s. Bairstow was batting on only 10 when he ducked underneath a short delivery from Cameron Green and casually walked out of the crease.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw the ball at the stumps and Bairstow was eventually adjudged stumped out. The dismissal has enraged the English cricket fraternity. The English crowd at Lord’s made their displeasure clear with chants of ‘cheat’ while the likes of Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were also seen having a few exchanges with the Australian players.
After the game ended, McCullum made it clear that he was furious with the event. Speaking to Test Match Special shortly after play, the England coach did not mince his words as he said that the Bairstow dismissal would strain the relations between the teams, saying: “I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer anytime soon, if that’s what you’re asking. From our point of view, we’ve got three Test matches to try and land some blows and try and win the Ashes and that’s where our focus will be.”
Andrew McDonald reacts to Brendon McCullum’s remark:
Andrew McDonald was asked about his reaction to Brendon McCullum’s remarks and the former Australia allrounder came up with a fitting response. McDonald insisted that he was disappointed by McCullum’s comments.
“I haven’t spoken to him, [have] heard that comment for the first time, and somewhat disappointed by that,” said McDonald.
Speaking further, he also shared his views on Bairstow’s dismissal. The Australian coach stated that he did not see any issue with the dismissal.
“There’s no doubt when a player is leaving their crease or leaving their ground at certain periods of time that you take that opportunity,” Andrew McDonald said.
“It’s [the same] with every player. It’s like when a player is running down the wicket to Nathan Lyon, does he take the opportunity to fire a ball down leg side, because he’s leaving his crease? There’s no doubt about that. You see a run-out opportunity at point, you throw at the bowler’s end.
“But any of these events are always going to polarise opinion,” Andrew McDonald added. “We saw it on day four with the [Mitchell Starc] catch as well. Some people thought it was out, some people thought it was not out… sometimes, you know, not everyone agrees with it.”
Talking about the game, Australia survived a huge scare from Ben Stokes to win the second Test by 43 runs. After ending Stokes’ stunning 155-run knock, Australia bowled out England for 327 runs to go 2-0 up in the five-match series.
