Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) assistant coach Shane Watson provided an official update on wicketkeeper-batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi after his on-field collision. The franchise medical team confirmed that the player suffered a concussion during the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Kolkata Knight Riders kept their playoff hopes alive with a four-wicket victory over the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens. Chasing a target of 148 runs, KKR completed the chase in 18.5 overs. However, the win also brought concern after Raghuvanshi suffered an injury during the match.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi Injury Update: KKR Issue Official Statement
The incident took place during the 11th over of first innings when Angkrish Raghuvanshi ran in to take a high catch off Tilak Varma’s shot. While attempting the catch, he collided with Varun Chakaravarthy, which resulted in a dropped chance and a head injury.
Shane Watson later confirmed that Raghuvanshi suffered neck pain, dizziness, and a severe headache after the collision. Although the youngster wanted to return to the field, the medical staff ruled him out of the remainder of the match.
“Ankrish, unfortunately, ran a long way to be able to try and get that catch. And unfortunately, the collision that he had with Varun Chakravarthy meant that he ended up having some neck pain, a bit of dizziness and a bit of a headache within a couple of overs of that as well,” Watson said.
“So, unfortunately, he wasn't able to finish off the game. And I know how desperate he was as well. He's someone who is as tough a competitor as I've ever met. So we certainly missed him from a batting perspective,” he added.
Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell Anchor Chase
The injury also created confusion over the concussion substitute rule. Kolkata Knight Riders initially announced Ramandeep Singh as the replacement on social media. However, match officials later approved Tejasvi Dahiya as the substitute because the replacement needed to be a like-for-like wicketkeeper.
Kolkata Knight Riders promoted veteran batter Manish Pandey to the number three position. Pandey, playing his first innings of the season, helped stabilize the chase after Finn Allen lost his wicket early.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane and Cameron Green also departed cheaply, increasing the pressure on the hosts. Pandey then built an important partnership with Rovman Powell during the middle overs. Pandey scored 45 runs off 33 balls, while Powell added 40 runs from 30 deliveries.
Concussion substitute Tejasvi Dahiya came out to bat in the final overs and scored 11 runs off 12 balls on his IPL debut before Corbin Bosch dismissed him. Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy guided Kolkata Knight Riders to victory with seven balls remaining.
Kolkata Knight Riders Keep Playoff Hopes Alive After Beating Mumbai Indians
Earlier in the match, Kolkata Knight Riders chose to bowl first after winning the toss. Their bowlers controlled the innings well before Corbin Bosch scored an unbeaten 32 off 18 balls. Saurabh Dubey, Kartik Tyagi, and Cameron Green picked up two wickets each as Mumbai Indians finished with 147 runs.
The victory moved Kolkata Knight Riders to sixth place on the points table with 13 points, ahead of Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, were officially eliminated from the playoff race and are at ninth with only four wins in 13 matches.
Despite winning six of their last seven games, KKR still face a difficult path to playoff qualification. Their chances now depend on results from other matches, and they also need a big win against Delhi Capitals on May 24 to improve their net run rate.
