Australian opener Usman Khawaja took an indirect dig at former head coach Justin Langer following their two-wicket win over England in the first Test of the Ashes 2023. Usman Khawaja said that Pat Cummins and Andrew McDonald created a comfortable and relaxing environment for the players.

Justin Langer was named Australia’s head coach after the ball-tampering saga in March 2018. Langer guided the team to their first-ever T20 World Cup victory in the 2021 edition, as well as a 4-0 series win in the Ashes series at home. However, players complained about his intense coaching style.

Usman Khawaja pointed out that the warm-ups every morning are now optional, adding that players can make a decision about their preparation.

“It’s hard to quantify it (in the wins), but I think everything around that is being done with the team, with Pat and Andrew McDonald in terms of just cutting out the fluff,” Khawaja said.

We Have A Very Good, Very Experienced Team – Usman Khawaja

Usman Khawaja said that the Australian team have been producing good results over the past 18 months with a balanced and experienced squad.

“We have a very good, very experienced team. Our bowling attack is very experienced, batting attack is very experienced. We’ve had a team together for a year-and-a-half, two years now which has gelled together,” he concluded.

Usman Khawaja was named the Player of the Match for his brilliant century in the series opener at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The left-handed batter registered his first Test hundred in English conditions.
