There was absolute drama on the 5th day of the opening Test Match as Australia somehow held their nerve and won a cracker of a contest. The management’s decision to leave out Mitchell Starc didn’t backfire. Josh Hazlewood did a pretty good job in place of Mitchell Starc and Hazlewood took 3 wickets in the match.

England would be unhappy after missing out on a well-deserving victory. The likes of Ollie Robinson had a pretty decent outing but couldn’t break the partnership of Lyon & Cummins which proved to the match-defining.

England perhaps needs to change the batting position of Jonny Bairstow as the batter can be a force to reckon with. England’s batters couldn’t convert their starts in the 2nd innings which hurt the team a lot as a target in excess of 320 would have been competitive.

Australia though have a lot to ponder as the trio of David Warner, Steve Smith & Marnus Labuschagne weren’t able to assert their dominance as it was the sheer brilliance of Usman Khawaja which took the team close to victory.

We didn’t feel as though we may have got swinging conditions here – Andrew McDonald

Andrew McDonald was having an interaction with cricket.com.au and revealed the reason behind Mitchell Starc’s omission from the opening Test match. Andrew McDonald pointed out that the decision to include Josh Hazlewood over Mitchell Starc was a gut-feeling one.

“I think the fact the line and length potentially over left-arm swing (*Mitchell Starc), and we didn’t feel as though we may have got swinging conditions here. It’s really down to a gut feel at selection, it can be critiqued any way you want,” said Andrew McDonald

“We feel as though, looking back on it, potentially Mitch could have played a role, there’s no doubt about that. But we felt like when we went into the game with all the information that we had, we made the best decision,” he stated.

“We took Starcy on that journey, he understands that and he understands the fact there are four more Test matches and he’s got a pivotal part to play within that,” he added.
