Ashes 2023: "Trying To Gain Energy From The Surface And Maybe Pushing A Little Bit Too Hard" - Stuart Broad On Usman Khawaja’s Wicket On No-Ball

Veteran English fast bowler Stuart Broad took a dig at the pitch used at the first Test of the Ashes 2023 at the Edgbaston in Birmingham and described it as “soulless”. Stuart Broad said that bowlers needed to work to extract some help from the pitch in the opening match of the Ashes series.
Broad got off to a good start with the ball in Australia’s first innings, dismissing David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in consecutive deliveries in the 11th over. The veteran pacer picked up the wicket of Usman Khawaja with the second new ball, but the on-field umpire declared it a no-ball.

It’s Really Frustrating – Stuart Broad
Stuart Broad expressed his frustration at his mistake and said the lack of support from the pitch for the bowlers could have been a factor.
“It’s really frustrating. I’m not really a big no-ball bowler. I have probably bowled more today than in a Test match day before. There’s no excuse,” Broad told the BBC’s Test Match Special.
“But it is the first innings of an Ashes Test match, you have some big emotions there so you are trying to gain energy from the surface and maybe pushing a little bit too hard. It is something to be aware of.
“It is a very slow, low surface that zaps the energy out of the ball. It is pretty characterless so far, pretty soulless, but you can only judge a surface towards the end of the match and see how it develops.”

Hopefully, It Is Not A Trend For The Whole Series – Stuart Broad
The 36-year-old hoped that they would get competitive pitches for the remainder of the ongoing Test series between England and Australia.
“It is certainly one of the slowest pitches I can remember bowling on in England,” Broad added.
“It has been hard work for the seamers and ultimately we are looking to entertain, have fun and get the crowd jumping and it is quite a difficult pitch to get play and misses on and nicks to slip on. Hopefully, it is not a trend for the whole series,” he concluded.
The Pat Cummins-led team ended the day’s play with a score of 311 runs for the loss of five wickets. Opening batter Usman Khawaja scored an unbeaten century of 126 runs with the help of 14 fours and two sixes. Khawaja and Alex Carey are the overnight Australian batters at the crease.
