Asia Cup 2023: "Ravichandran Ashwin Will Definitely Be Useful" - MSK Prasad Bats For Veteran Spinner's Inclusion In Asia Cup, World Cup

Former Indian selector MSK Prasad has batted for Ravichandran Ashwin’s inclusion in India’s Asia Cup and ICC World Cup 2023 squads. Ashwin last played white-ball cricket in the T20 World Cup 2022.

Prasad reckons that a seasoned spinner like Ravichandran Ashwin will be invaluable to the Indian side in tournaments like Asia Cup and World Cup as they are being played in Asian conditions.

Speaking to Star Sports, Prasad spoke on Ashwin and his impact against bowling to the left-handers in spinning conditions in India.

Still Fancy Ravichandran Ashwin: MSK Prasad

“I still fancy Ravichandran Ashwin. You are playing in Asian conditions, and I think he is one guy who might be very handy with so many left-handers in the oppositions right now. Australia are filled with left-handers, we have seen that. Ashwin will definitely be useful because he is also in the best state of mind also. He can be handy, especially when you are playing in Sri Lanka and India,” said MSK Prasad.

Ashwin’s white-ball career has been a controversial one lately. He played above Yuzvendra Chahal in the T20 World Cup last year which drew a lot of eyeballs.

Ashwin was also a part of the Indian squad in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. However, after that till the 2019 World Cup, Ashwin did not play white-ball cricket at all before being picked up for the T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022 squads.

Ashwin remains India’s premier spinner in Test cricket reaching close to 500 wickets in his Test career. In his ODI career, the off-spinner has picked up 151 wickets from 113 matches. His last ODI appearance came in January 2021 against South Africa.

With the team management experimenting a lot in recent times, it will be interesting to see if the selectors resort back to picking Ravichandran Ashwin in Asia Cup and World Cup squads.
