Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has backed Yuzvendra Chahal for Asia Cup 2023 squad after the latter was ousted from the final team. Harbhajan Singh also feels that Team India is lacking a bit in the spin department with the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal.

BCCI announced the India squad for Asia Cup 2023 on Monday. Yuzvendra Chahal, who has been a regular member of white-ball formats for the last few years, was not picked for the tournament.

In the spin department, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav was inducted as a primary spinner. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are two spin all-rounders in the squad. Notably, all of them are left-arm spinners unlike Chahal, who is a right-arm spinner.

Team India Lacking A Bit In Spin Department Without Yuzvendra Chahal- Harbhajan Singh

While speaking on his YouTube Channel, former Indian player Harbhajan Singh spoke about Yuzvendra Chahal’s ouster from Asia Cup 2023. The former off-spinner believes that there is no better genuine spinner than Chahal.

“The team is lacking a bit in the spin department, because there is no Yuzvendra Chahal. If we talk about genuine spinners, I don’t think there is anyone better than Chahal in India, especially in white-ball cricket.

His last few matches have not gone well, but that does not make him a bad bowler at all. So, I think it was important that Chahal be part of the Asia Cup squad,” the former right-arm spinner said.

Harbhajan Singh also hopes that Yuzvendra Chahal will be part of the forthcoming ICC World Cup 2023, which is the most crucial campaign to take place this year.

“I hope this is not the end of Chahal. It is important that the doors remain open for him in the World Cup squad, because he is a proven match-winner.

For now, maybe it is fine that you have dropped him because of poor form, but I think that even if he was part of the squad and not the playing XI, it would have helped his confidence atleast,” the 43-year-old further said.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has said that ICC World Cup 2023 squad will be quite similar to that of Asia Cup 2023. Hence, there is uncertainty about whether Chahal will be part of ODI World Cup or not.

Meanwhile, Asia Cup 2023 begins on August 30. India will face Pakistan in their opening encounter on September 2. With Nepal and Pakistan, the men-in-blue are part of Group A in the tournament.
