The Australian team has “no cowards,” according to Test captain Pat Cummins, in response to claims made by Justin Langer, a former coach, that leaks cost him the game.

The first Test between Australia and West Indies, which begins on Wednesday, has been overshadowed by Langer’s recent open interview on the Back Chat podcast, in which he criticised anonymous “cowards” who he claimed leaked information about him and thought some players were not forthcoming with their criticism.

The problem, which has become more prominent since the Australian Test season began in Langer’s hometown of Perth, was addressed in public for the first time by Cummins, who vehemently defended his locker room.

“There’s no cowards in an Australian cricket team, not ever,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “I’d probably never disclose private conversations. I think it’s disappointing sometimes the focus gets drawn to off-field issues but it hasn’t really affected our team.”

In an apparent attempt to mend fences, Langer later clarified his remarks by comparing the players to “my younger brothers.”

“I think there’s no ill will to what he was trying to do and he clarified afterwards,” At Optus Stadium, with the “Justin Langer Stand” in the background, Cummins stated.

“I think he had a think about it and clarified it, so thank him for that. But we’re really proud of the last 12 months, how we’ve fronted up, the way we’ve played, the way we’ve conducted ourselves. Players can certainly hold their heads high.”

This summer, Langer will join host broadcaster Seven’s commentary crew. Cummins said he was “looking forward” to seeing Langer and wasn’t anticipating a cold reception from the small-town populace.

“He’ll be in and around here commentating so it’ll be good,” Cummins said. “We love playing here at the stadium. My idol mentor, DK Lillee as well, it’s his home state.

“We haven’t felt that at all,” When questioned if the Australian team was unpopular in Western Australia, he added. “I know there’s been some conjecture but I think it camouflages over a lot of the good stuff that’s been going on and support we’ve been receiving.”

There were no shocks when Cummins revealed the lineup for Australia’s match against the West Indies, which omitted Marcus Harris and fast Scott Boland.

In the first Test match to be played in Perth since December 2019, all-rounder Cameron Green will make his local debut as a member of an unchanged batting order from their last Test in Sri Lanka mid-year.

“To be honest it is the most stable team I have played in ever,” Cummins said. “You could probably have picked the side 12 months ago, I feel like we are in a good spot.”
