Back-to-back massive announcements by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as they have announced squads for the upcoming T20I series and the India A squad as well today (June 6).
Alongside announcing the teams for the future assignments, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel has announced the replacement of injured Virat Kohli, who has been ruled out of the upcoming India vs Afghanistan 3-match ODI series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal in place of Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli will not be able to take part in the contest because of the hamstring injury he received during the IPL 2026 championship race. In place of the injured Virat Kohli, the BCCI has named opener Yashasvi Jaiswal as the replacement.
Yashasvi Jaiswal will join the ODI squad to take on Afghanistan after the conclusion of the ongoing one-off Test match in New Chandigarh.
Ajit Agarkar's official statement on Virat's absence
"With Virat at this point, it’s just been less than a week since he injured himself in the (IPL) finals. We don’t know the timelines yet. But it looks like he might be fit for that England one-day series. It’s not a definitive answer, so don’t hold me to it. I haven’t had a clear timeline from the physio yet," Agarkar said on Saturday.
According to several media updates published in the last couple of days, the batting maestro injured his hamstring during the IPL 2026 final against the Gujarat Titans. Virat played a match-defining knock in the final, but might have injured himself during the match.
Virat was in stunning form during the ODI series against New Zealand this year
As the chief selector mentioned, there is official confirmation on when the batter will make his comeback for competitive games. But, if the reports are to be believed, then Virat Kohli may have to wait for six weeks before gaining his match fitness again. He has consulted with a renowned doctor regarding the injury. However, hopefully, no surgery will be needed for recovery.
Since taking retirements from the T20Is and from the Tests, Virat Kohli is only active in the One-Day International format. His last appearance for India, in the format, was during the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand, ahead of the ICC T20I World Cup 2026, where he made 240 runs, averaging 80 and maintaining a strike-rate of 105.26.
In comparison to Virat's ODI stats, Yashasvi Jaiswal has played only a few matches in the format. The opener has scored 171 runs at an average of 57 in 4 ODIs. He made his ODI debut last year against England when Virat Kohli was injured. As a replacement for the veteran, Jaiswal was named to the squad.
