India opener Shubman Gill has reportedly been discharged from hospital in Chennai on Tuesday (October 10). The right-handed batsman is currently down with dengue and missed India’s World Cup-opener against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium a couple of days ago.
On Monday (October 9), the BCCI finally gave a medical update on the opening batsman and announced that he would not travel to Delhi with the rest of the Indian team for the match against Afghanistan. The match is scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday (October 11).
“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” the BCCI stated.
The board, however, did not reveal that the highly-rated batsman had to be hospitalised after his platelet count fell. While he travelled with the team to Chennai, he could not take part in any training session due to fever before the platelet count fell.

With Shubman Gill now discharged, it would be interesting to see whether he plays against Pakistan or not. The team-management might decided against risking him at the beginning of the World Cup. Missing him, however, will be a huge blow for Team India.
The right-hander has a stunning record at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the venue for the India vs Pakistan clash. He has scored 572 runs from 9 matches with a highest of 128 including three fifties and two centuries at this venue. While he has yet to play an ODI at this venue, he has already hit Test and T20I centuries in Ahmedabad. In his absence, Ishan Kishan is likely to be Rohit Sharma’s opening partner in the coming games.
