Australian batter Cameron Bancroft will have a golden opportunity to make a comeback into the Test squad to replace veteran opening batter David Warner. Cameron Bancroft has been named in the Australia A four-day squad to face New Zealand A later this month.
The selectors have announced a 17-member squad to face the New Zealand A team in two four-day matches, which will include a pink-ball day-night game in Mackay. Cameron Bancroft, who is the most experienced player in the squad, is expected to open the innings.
The 30-year-old hasn’t represented Australia since the 2019 Ashes. However, he impressed with his batting in the Sheffield Shield season. David Warner recently announced his plan to conclude his red-ball cricket career following the SCG Test against Pakistan in January.
Another Opportunity For Cameron Bancroft – Adam Voges
Bancroft’s state coach, Adam Voges, who will also coach Australia A for the series against New Zealand A, said that this is a chance for him to solidify his position and pressure selectors for a Test team spot.
“I think, results wise, he’s been outstanding over the last 12 months. I think technically he’s going as well as he has done and he’s got confidence in the way that he’s playing at the moment. I think he’s really settled in his game plan, the way that he’s tried to approach each innings and we saw that consistency last year in his run-scoring output,” Voges told ESPNcricinfo.
“This is just another opportunity for him along with six Shield games before the Test summer to continue to pile on the runs and really put pressure on the selectors to get him at the front of the queue when the opportunity does present. So that’s his challenge over the next little bit but what a great opportunity to try and kick start things off next month,” he added.
Bancroft has displayed exceptional form in Sheffield Shield cricket over the past year and a half, amassing 1380 runs in 32 innings at an average of 49.28, including six centuries. He scored a century in the first innings of the 2021-22 final, contributing to Western Australia’s title victory.
