Gautam Gambhir claimed has that his then-girlfriend and now-wife wife Natasha had rejected his opportunity for free tickets to the 2011 World Cup final, claiming that it was “just yet another game of cricket” and therefore it was “not that meaningful.”

In that historical encounter against Sri Lanka at the Wankhade Stadium, Gambhir top-scored with a magnificent 97 to help India win the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Natasha only recognized the significance of the victory after seeing the entire country applauding, he claimed, noting that she is still ashamed by the occurrence.

Gambhir said on Jatin Sapru’s YouTube show ‘Over and Out,’ ”

“When we arrived in Mumbai after winning the Mohali match against Pakistan, I asked her, ‘Do you want to come to the final?’ ‘Let me think,’ she said, then called back and asked, ‘Is it that important?’ It’s just another game of cricket”

“Who cares about going to Mumbai; my sister and brother are coming,’ she remarked. So her family and brother came, and when we won, she didn’t realise until the whole country was rejoicing.”

“Why is the entire country celebrating?’ she inquired, to which I replied that we had won the World Cup after 20 years or so. Even now, when you ask her about turning down the offer for that game when her sister and brother were present, she feels humiliated.

Gautam Gambhir explains the load of expectations on his shoulders:

When questioned if having a non-professional partner would have benefited him in the game, Gambhir stated it might not have made a difference if she had arrived. The former opener stated he simply “watched the ball” and gave his best because of the occasion and expectations. He declared:

” To be honest, it didn’t matter to me because it was such a big event that it didn’t matter who was in the stadium or who wasn’t…. because you were going to play such a big match in the end.”

“I don’t care about the occasion, but you know you’re playing a game where winning will make the entire country happy, with 100-odd crore people happy. When you have a lot of pressure on your shoulders, all you want to do is monitor the ball and win the game.”

With 10324 runs, including 20 centuries and 63 half-centuries, Gambhir retired in 2018 as among India’s best openers throughout all forms.
