Former Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar To Be Bestowed With An SJFI Award
The Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) convened in its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday and has decided to bestow former Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, with an SJFI medal.
Gold-medallist Olympian, Neeraj Chopra, expectedly won the Sportsman of the Year award while weightlifter and silver-medallist, Mirabai Chanu, took home the Sportswoman of the Year award from the prestigious event.
Indian Men’s team that won the bronze medal in Hockey secured the Team of the Year award. Pramod Bhagat and Sumit Antil shared the Para-athlete of the Year award for their performance in the Paralympics events.
Sharp-shooter Avani Lekhra received the women’s Para-athlete of the Year prize. The AGM also took a few decisions regarding the board – A Vinod was elected as the new SJFI President, Prashant Keni was named as the Secretary, and Vidyut Kalita is the new Treasurer.
Shikhar Dhawan can make a comeback to the Indian team like Sunil Gavaskar, says Anshuman Gaekwad
Former Indian head coach Anshuman Gaekwad has stated that out-of-favor Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan, needs to get a string of scores going his way to get out of the bad form he is in at the moment. The poor patches happen to every cricketer, including the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, said Gaekwad.
“It all depends on how selectors look at it. I believe form can change but class remains, and batters like Shikhar need just one good innings to strike form. Sometimes, you have a bad patch and it has happened to the best of the players, including Sunil Gavaskar and Mohinder Amarnath. In that phase, no matter what you try, you just don’t get the result,” Gaekwad said.
Although Dhawan has been in decent form of late, the number of openers that India has in its armory has put the left-hander in a tough spot with the selectors. Unless he strikes it big in the domestic season, he might find it hard to make a comeback to the Indian team.
