Glenn Maxwell Snubs Himself, Travis Head, Adam Zampa And David Warner To Select His Hero For Australia In The World Cup
Pat Cummins led Australia to a historic triumph in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and the team had many heroes, from Travis Head, who won Player of the Match, to Glenn Maxwell, who produced a couple of historic knocks that will be etched in the folklore of the sport. The likes of David Warner and Adam Zampa were among the highest run-getters and wicket-takers in the competition too, as they won the coveted trophy for a record-extending sixth time.
While Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, David Warner, and Adam Zampa have dominated the discussions around Australia’s incredible campaign, Maxwell named his player of the tournament from the Australian squad and snubbed himself alongside the other aforementioned players. The star all-rounder has named Australian skipper Pat Cummins as Australia’s best player in the competition.
Glenn Maxwell highlighted Cummins’ contributions to the team on important occasions, and that his role in the triumph cannot be seen in stats alone. Maxwell was quick to recall that while it was his phenomenal double hundred that stole the show against Afghanistan, Pat Cummins played an integral part in it with his gritty knock from the other end. He also revealed Cummins’ stunning tactical ploy against Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the final.
Glenn Maxwell Picks Pat Cummins As Australia’s Star
“The stats might not say it but he was probably our player of the tournament, just for the impacts he had at different stages. You look at the partnerships he had, the impact he had against Sri Lanka … he was the one to make the breakthroughs.”
“[Against] Afghanistan he was the one to stick around with me at the other end, [in the] semi-final he was there hitting the winning runs at the end, [in] the final he was the one who changed the plans to go to that short ball and slower ones without a mid-off to Kohli and KL Rahul. It was just extraordinary tactical awareness,” said Maxwell to the AGE.COM.AU
“Those little moments I look back on and think that was absolutely brilliant, and I don’t think he got enough recognition for how good he was through the whole tournament. It wasn’t just his bowling or batting, it was a multitude of different things that he was able to contribute. It just puts a smile on my face thinking back, and just that journey from after those [first] two games,” Maxwell added.
Glenn Maxwell also played a key role in Australia’s World Cup-winning campaign. In fact, he took the prized wicket of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the finals who was looking on song scoring a quickfire 47. Australia chased down a target of 241 in the finals where Travis Head was the star scoring 137 off 120 deliveries.
Glenn Maxwell ended his trip to India with another sensational knock in the 3rd T20I of a five-match series against India. He marked history by scoring his fourth ton in the shortest format. Now Glenn Maxwell has the joint highest tons in T20Is equalling Rohit Sharma’s tally of four tons.
