Gujarat Titans (GT) spinner Sai Kishore opened up about skipper Shubman Gill's strategy of underutilizing him against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2024. Sai Kishore stated that every decision is made for the team's success and added that he should be able to accept it.
The Shubman Gill-led team suffered a 4-run loss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday, April 24. The visiting team failed to chase down a target of 225 runs. It marked the Gujarat Titans' second loss against the Rishabh Pant-led team in the ongoing tournament.
The Titans opted to bowl after winning the toss. The home team got off to a strong start but lost three wickets in the powerplay, leaving them at 44/3. Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant both scored crucial half-centuries. Sai Kishore bowled the penultimate over and gave away 22 runs.
You'd Be Slightly Hesitant - Sai Kishore
R Sai Kishore defended the captain's decision, stating that the captain and coach might have considered alternatives before making the call.
“You have to put yourself in the shoes of the captain and the coach and how they'll be thinking. If I was leading the side and if there was some other spinner or some other bowler whom you feel there could be an extra chance for scoring, maybe you'd be slightly hesitant,” Sai Kishore said in the post-match press conference.
Sometimes It Doesn't Work - Sai Kishore
The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer stated that Ashish Nehra prioritizes team success over individual egos. Sai Kishore acknowledged that the move didn't work for the team despite having bigger boundaries.
"Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. It also depends on the ground dimensions. Say we are playing on a slightly slower wicket with bigger boundaries. Last game, I bowled the 19th over with two lefties..."
“I really felt it was not a thing to be worried about. Ashish Nehra is big on having no egos on the side. And every call is taken for the team's success, and as a player, you should also be able to take it," Sai Kishore added.
The Delhi Capitals scored 97 runs in the last five overs, marking the second-highest run tally recorded in that period in the history of the IPL. Rishabh Pant scored 31 runs against Mohit Sharma in the final over. Sharma achieved an unwanted record as he conceded 73 runs in his four overs.
The Gujarat Titans faced an early setback with skipper Shubman Gill's dismissal. However, Wriddhiman Saha and Sai Sudarshan shared an 82-run partnership for the second wicket. David Miller scored 55 runs off 23 overs, including six boundaries and three sixes, to put the team in contention.
