The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), India’s cricket governing body, on Thursday, October 27, made a landmark announcement that the board would pay equal match salaries to contracted players, both men, and women.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to his official Twitter handle to announce the historical development. Earlier, there was a big difference in the pay gap. Male cricketers are paid more per game than females, and the board wishes to eliminate gender discrimination.

The Indian women’s cricket team has been performing exceptionally well in recent times. They finished second in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 and whitewashed England women 3-0 in an ODI series in England. Harmanpreet Kaur’s India women won the Asia Cup for the seventh time earlier this month, beating Sri Lanka by eight wickets in a one-sided final.

A Women’s IPL with six teams has been announced for next year. The dates of the tournament are yet to be announced, but it is scheduled to take place just before the men’s IPL. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has expressed happiness over this development. She stated that this is a historic moment for women’s cricket in India and congratulated the BCCI on the good news.
