Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium witnessed a complete shock for Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in their IPL 2025 clash on Wednesday, April 29. They gave everything, but in the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finished on the winning side following their blistering batting efforts at the packed stadium.

Ryan Rickelton played one of the best knocks of the season. The left-hander smashed his maiden IPL century in just 44 balls and became the fastest player to score a hundred for the Mumbai Indians. Will Jacks also played an attacking knock of 46 off 22 against SRH.

MI stunned by SRH in high-scoring IPL 2026 thriller

Rickelton, who played a memorable unbeaten knock of 123 off 55 balls, hitting 10 fours and 8 sixes, added 93 runs with Jacks to take the Mumbai Indians to a huge total of 243 for 5 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It seemed that MI had almost won the game before SRH delivered a shocker.

Travis Head was in his usual attacking mode and went on to smash 76 runs off just 30 balls, while Abhishek Sharma also played a quick knock of 45 off 24 balls. Their massive opening partnership of 129 runs in just 9.1 overs had already set the massive platform for the SRH.

However, Hyderabad lost a couple of cheap wickets, but Heinrich Klaasen played another blistering knock of 65 not out off 30 balls to help Salil Arora (30 runs off 10 balls) finish the job. SRH chased down the massive target of 244 runs in 18.4 overs with six wickets in hand against MI.

Mumbai Indians' playoff hopes dented severely

This win has boosted SRH’s playoff chances as they jumped to the third spot on the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 9 games. On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians are now struggling near the bottom and will need something special in their remaining matches to stay in the race for the playoffs.

It was SRH’s fifth straight win in the ongoing season and MI’s sixth defeat. This win was extra special for Sunrisers Hyderabad at Wankhede Stadium, as they have managed to win only three times now at this venue. SRH’s previous wins came in 2018 and 2022 in Mumbai.

Mumbai Indians hit a new low in IPL

On the other hand, it was a big embarrassment for the five-time IPL champions. MI has now lost four consecutive matches at the Wankhede Stadium for the first time ever in IPL history.

The SRH hammering also brought another unwanted record for Hardik Pandya's team. In their last match, Mumbai suffered their first-ever defeat by a 100+ margin against Chennai Super Kings, and now they have lost the match at the Wankhede Stadium while defending 200+ runs.

It was MI’s only second loss while defending 200 or more runs in the IPL, having previously suffered defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad last year. They have an excellent record while defending 200+ targets, winning 19 of 21 games so far in the tournament.

Mumbai Indians’ biggest weapon, Jasprit Bumrah, has been going through a rough patch, and he conceded 54 runs in his quota of 4 overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With this spell, Bumrah recorded his third-most expensive figure in the IPL history.
