ICC World Cup 2023: "India's Chances Quite Bright Because Playing At Home"- Mohammad Kaif

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif is optimistic about India’s chances of winning the World Cup at home. The tournament will be played from October 5 to November 19 with the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad hosting the campaign opener and the final.

India will begin their campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai. The big match against Pakistan will be played in Ahmedabad on October 15. India are also hosting the event for the first time unanimously after being the vo-hosts in the 1987, 1996, and 2011 editions.

During an interaction on ‘Virtual Encounters’ on DD India, Kaif was asked how he sees India’s chances at the 2023 World Cup. The former Indian cricketer said that playing at home is a big factor for the Men in Blue which might work to their advantage in 2023.

“India’s chances are quite bright because playing at home, we know the conditions better compared to other teams. Spinners might be able to play a bigger role. We have the players to win the tournament” Kaif said.

He further said that India will depend on the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to have a good run in the tournament. Rohit incidentally finished as the top run-getter in the last World Cup with 648 runs in nine matches with five centuries averaging 81.00. Kohli finished with 443 runs in nine matches with five fifties to his name at an average of 55.37.

We Need All Senior Players Ready: Mohammad Kaif

“The challenging part for India will be that you need to have all the senior players ready, fitness-wise and form-wise. Bowling should be okay I guess. If we can bat well, we will be a tough side to beat. If we talk about Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, all these senior players have to stand up and win matches” Kaif said On Kohli and Rohit.

We Need Jasprit Bumrah: Mohamamd Kaif

He concluded by saying that India needs Jasprit Bumrah to be back in the setup to brighten their chances in the World Cup. The spearhead has been away from international cricket for more than a year with injury concerns.

“If we can add Bumrah in the squad, he has been injured for the last few months now, now they are saying he might be back for the Asia Cup, so it’s good news. I think we need Bumrah. Rohit Sharma as a captain has probably missed Bumrah a lot” Kaif concluded saying.
