India Squad for ICC World Cup 2023, Schedule 2023, Team List, Match List. India will be hosting the ICC World Cup 2023 unanimously. This is the first time that India is hosting an ICC World Cup all by itself. In the previous two editions in 1996 and 2011, they were the co-hosts. Incidentally, India last won the World Cup in 2011, when they were the co-hosts. The tournament will be played from October 5-November 19 with India beginning their campaign from on October 8 against Australia in Chennai.
The Mein Blue have not won an ICC title in the last 10 years. They won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni which was the last ICC title they won. Since then India lost two semi-finals of the 50-over World Cup (2015, 2019), the Champions Trophy final in 2017 against Pakistan, the 2014 T20 World Cup final against Sri Lanka, and the finals of the last two World Test Championships.
India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad was recently announced which marked the comebacks of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul The BCCI has announced a full-strength side for the tournament. The comebacks of Rahul, and Iyer also have possibly solved the conundrum surrounding the number and five slots.
The return of Jasprit Bumrah is another massive boost for the Indian cricket team along with Prasidh Krishna. The likes of Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shardul Thakur give India plenty of options for all-rounder slots. Hardik’s form with the bat has been a bit off in recent times and he should work on it.
The Asia Cup 2023 will be a big test for the chosen players to prove their potential and win an important title heading into the Asia Cup. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli hold the key and it is they who need to revolve the batting around themselves.
Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma hinted that India’s 15-member ODI squad will be picked from this group of players and the information is circling around in media houses as well. The absence of R Ashwin and more importantly Yuzvendra Chahal from India’s Asia Cup squad has been a subject of debate. Chahal has not been in his best form since the last couple of years and has struggled in ODIs and T20Is alike.
In this article, we choose India’s 15-member squad for the ICC World Cup. Despite the criticism surrounding the form of a few players, India are considered as the favourites to win the World Cup being the hosts and having complete knowledge of the conditions.

India Squad for ICC World Cup 2023, Schedule 2023, Team List, Match List
Openers: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill
Rohit and Gill are the preferred openers. In the recent press conference after the announcement of the Asia Cup squad, skipper Rohit and selector Ajit spoke clearly about the preferred opening combination. Rohit is one of the best white-ball openers in modern cricket and Gill has had a fabulous 2023 scoring 750 runs in 12 matches so far. He would like to cap off the year with a good performance in World Cups.
Middle-Order: Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav
Kohli and Iyer and certainities at three and four. Iyer has been the best bet for India at number four scoring at an average of over 50. Before his injury, he scored tons of runs at number four. His average at number four is close to 50, which is better than most others tried at that position. There is no doubt regarding Kohli batting at number three. His recent form should come as a blessing to this Indian side. He would like to make an impact in the Asia Cup before the WC.
All-Rounders: Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja
Jadeja and Hardik are the designated all-rounders in the Indian team for the World Cup. Both played the last edition and will play this edition as well. One is a seam-bowling all-rounder while the other is a spin-bowling all-rounders. Both are crucial to India’s lower order and will be tasked to score runs in the end overs. Both will be crucial with the ball as well. Axar Patel is a part of the Asia Cup squad and might make it to the World Cup squad as well. His batting and fielding ability helped him get the edge over Yuzvendra Chahal.
Wicket-Keepers: KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan
Rahul has returned to India’s Asia Cup squad. However, he is not yet fully fit as per reports, and is set to miss the initial games in the tournament. Ishan Kishan is more of a backup keeper in case there is a need for him to take the field. In a normal scenario with Rahul fit, he will walk into the squad as the specialist keeper and will bat at number five. Rahul at five has been very productive for India scoring runs at an average of 53.
Pacers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna
Bumrah will lead the pace attack after his return. He led the side against Ireland and seems to be fully fit. Mohd Shami and Siraj will partner him from the other end/ Prasidh with his height will have an impact in the World Cup. He will try and bounce out the opposition batters. Shardul has a happy knack of picking up wickets and will hope to do his job in the World Cup.
He can also swing around his bat in the final overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was instrumental for India in the last World Cup was ignored from selection in the Asia Cup and is well and truly out of the management’s plan for the World Cup.
Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav’s recent form in ODI cricket has helped him edge ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal. He was dropped from the Indian squad across formats in 2020 and 2021 after the 2019 World Cup. He had a dip in his IPL form as well. However, a successful season with Delhi Capitals in IPL 2022 saw him make a comeback to the India team. He has taken 34 ODI wickets in the last two years and has bowled really well in T20Is as well. He has already taken 8 wickets in seven T20Is this year and has been a part of the team consistently. He will have an important role to play for India in the World Cup.
