India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, refused to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during the post-match ceremony in Dubai. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that the team could not accept the award from a person representing a country that is “waging a war against our country.”
The Men in Blue sealed the Asia Cup title with a third consecutive win over Pakistan on Sunday, September 28. Jasprit Bumrah and the bowling unit dismissed the opposition for just 146 in 19.1 overs. The Indian batters completed the chase in the final over to secure a five-wicket victory with two balls to spare.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Walks Away With Asia Cup Trophy and Medals
The post-match presentation ceremony was delayed. India, who had just won the tournament, refused to accept the trophy because it was being presented by Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Naqvi, who is known for his anti-India remarks, stayed on the stage.
The Indian players chose not to move forward to take the silverware from him. However, Tilak Varma, Kuldeep Yadav, and Abhishek Sharma received their prizes from the sponsors. The winning team, however, did not get the trophy.
India were willing to accept the award from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, but Naqvi did not allow that option.
Many Indian supporters booed Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha when he walked up to the stage. Naqvi left the ground with the trophy, while the Indian team returned to their hotel empty-handed. It became one of the most controversial and disappointing post-match ceremonies.
We Are Going to Lodge a Very Strong Protest - BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia
Devajit Saikia condemned Mohsin Naqvi’s behavior during the trophy ceremony. Saikia said that the country is in conflict with Pakistan, and the team could not accept the award from Naqvi. He also stated that Naqvi should not take the trophy and the medals away from India.
"India is fighting a war with a country, and a leader belonging to that country was supposed to hand over the trophy to us...We cannot accept a trophy from a person who represents a country that is waging a war against our country," Saikia told ANI.
"So we have refused to take that trophy, but that does not mean that the gentleman will take the trophy and the medals, which are to be given to our country, to his own hotel room."
"That is totally unexpected, and we hope that his good sense will prevail. We are going to lodge a very strong protest against the behaviour of the gentleman in today's prize distribution ceremony."
It Is Very Unfortunate and Unsportsmanlike - Devajit Saikia
Devajit Saikia described the act as “unfortunate and unsportsmanlike” and hoped that the trophy and medals would be returned to India. He also confirmed that the BCCI plans to raise a formal complaint against Naqvi’s actions at the ICC conference in Dubai in November.
"We have decided not to take the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan. So we decided not to take it from him. But that does not mean that the gentleman will take away the trophy with him, along with the medals," Saikia told ANI.
"So it is very unfortunate and unsportsmanlike, and we hope that the trophy and the medals will be returned to India as soon as possible. There is an ICC conference in November in Dubai. In the next conference, we are going to launch a very serious and very strong protest against the act of the ACC chairperson," he added.
