NCPEDP lodges Police complaint against Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina for ‘mocking’ disabled people

The former Indian cricket icons Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina have found themselves in hot water for mocking the disabled individuals in a viral social media video.

Actually, India’s 2011 World Cup heroes were celebrating their World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2024 triumph on the tunes of 'Tauba Tauba' from the film ‘Bad Newz’.

Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina face Police complaint for mocking disabled persons

Harbhajan had uploaded a video on his Instagram handle, where he along with his India Champions teammates Yuvraj, Raina and Gurkeerat Mann can be seen pretending to limp to the tune of the song 'Tauba Tauba', seemingly trying to show the impact of taking part in a tournament on their aging bodies.

However, their act was seen as mockery and an insult to the disabled persons. This led the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) to lodge a police complaint against the former Indian cricketers for “insulting and mocking” the differently abled people through their acts on social media.

Arman Ali, the Executive Director of the NCPEDP has lodged a formal complaint against Harbhajan, Yuvraj, Raina, and Gurkeerat at Amar Colony police station in New Delhi, accusing them of insulting and ridiculing over 10 crore disabled individuals in the country. He also dragged Instagram for breaching the Information Technology Act in his complaint.

According to News18, the complaint lodged by the NCPEDP’s executive director, Arman Alim reads: “When I saw the video of Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina where they were pretending like disabled, kind of mockery on a viral song, I think it’s an insult to more than 10 crore disabled people of India. They can be seen walking and limping in a manner which is offensive to persons with disabilities.”

The complaint further reads: “Harbhajan Singh is an MP, and he should raise his voice for the disabled, but what kind of video he is making? In India, there is an acute lack of awareness concerning disabilities. You are spreading myth and making fun of them and that’s why I have filed a complaint. This entire act has been done in disguise of casual entertainment.

We also want to register this complaint against Sandhya Devanathan, the Vice President and Managing Director of Meta India as the platform is also in violation of the Information Technology Act of 2000 by allowing such content to be posted on their platform Instagram which violating user guidelines.”

Notably, the India Champions defeated the Pakistan Champions by five wickets in the final to win the inaugural edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2024 in Birmingham. Ambati Rayudu, Yusuf Pathan, and Gurkeerat were instrumental in the India Champions’ WCL 2024 title triumph in England. Yuvraj’s captaincy was on point in the tournament.
