Netherlands Batter Ben Cooper Retires From International Cricket
Netherlands batter Ben Cooper has announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday after a career that spanned eight years.
The decision comes as a big blow to the Dutch as the left-hander was just 29 and had plenty of promising years ahead in his cricketing career. He had made himself unavailable for Cricket Super League’s fixtures against South Africa and Afghanistan.
However, the retirement announcement was definitely not the call everyone was expecting. Cooper is the top scorer in T20Is for the Netherlands, having a tally of 1239 runs in 58 matches at an average of 28.
Ben Cooper’s domestic record
He also has a good record in First-Class cricket, with his best performances coming in the now-defunct Intercontinental Cup where he has amassed 451 runs at a stunning average of 75.
He has played 127 games in his career, ending with 994 runs. Cooper has come a long way since making his debut against Canada back in 2013 and from his playing days for VRA Amsterdam.
Cooper holds the record for being the only batter to score a double hundred in the Netherlands’ highest-rated domestic competition. He managed to do it in his debut season, which only accentuates his credibility.
Cooper’s most memorable moment came in a first-class match where he scored 173* and built a stunning partnership of 288 with the captain, Pieter Seelaar. Incidentally, it is the highest partnership for any wicket in a Dutch top-flight match.
