New Zealand players playing in the IPL have a rich history. Brendon McCullum kicked off the tournament brilliantly with an unbeaten 158 in the very first match of the league.

The transition of good Kiwi cricketers is now carried on by Devon Conway, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, and Rachin Ravindra Among others. All of them have been integral to the team's success over the years.

The IPL 2025 mega auction will give all these players another chance to stake a claim at finding a franchise. Many of them are expected to be retained for the franchise they play for.

Conway for CSK and Boult for Rajasthan Royals are almost guaranteed to carry on playing for the same franchise.

Talking about retentions, it was one of the most debated topics in the recent meeting between the IPL owners. Most of the franchises are not in favor of mega auctions as it forces them to disrupt the core of the side.

However, they are in favor of mini auctions every year. The BCCI in response said that they will review the suggestions and come up with a decision by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, in this article, we pick five New Zealand cricketers who can retire from T20 cricket if not picked in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

New Zealand Legends Set To Retire From T20s If Not Picked In IPL 2025

Tim Southee

Southee played for several franchises in the IL, namely CSK, RR, and KKR. He is the top wicket-taker in T20I international cricket with 164 wickets. He recently played in the T20 World Cup for New Zealand.

The Kiwis who made it to knockouts of the last two T20 World Cups lost to Afghanistan and were knocked out of the tournament. Southee last played in IPL 2022 for KKR. In case he goes unsold he can think of retiring from T20s.

Glenn Phillips

Despite being a brilliant batter and gun fielder teams do not somehow prefer to take Glenn Phillips into their team. He last played for Sunrisers Hyderabad who kept him on the bench throughout IPL 2024.

He is a top-order batter but has never got his chance to bat anywhere in the top five ever in the IPL. If he goes uncold in this IPL auction, he can think about retiring fromT20s.

Tim Seifert

Seifer is a keeper-batsman from New Zealand who has features for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He played one game in 2021 and two games for KKR in IPL 2022.

He plays T20 leagues all across the globe but has never found his footing in the IPL. If he does not get selected in IPL 2025, he might well retire from T20 cricket.

Ish Sodhi

Sodhi is another of those international cricketers who despite a brilliant international record has never found a long stint in the IPL.

He has played just 8 matches in his IPL career and took just nine wickets. He even worked as a spin consultant with Rajasthan Royals.

Kane Williamson

After the T20 World Cup 2024, it will be interesting to see how long Kane Williamson plays international cricket. Under his leadership, The Kiwis could not make it to the knockouts of the T20 World Cup.

This leaves his fans wondering whether he will be rebought by any of the franchises in the upcoming auction.
