India National Cricket Team are all set to have a new captain in the longest format of the game. This came after Rohit Sharma's position as a skipper, as well as the batter, came under massive scanner after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which Australia won 3-1.
The BCCI had a review meeting of the team's poor performances of late and as per the several reports, it was learned that the governing body decided to move on from Rohit Sharma. Dainik Jagran reported that the senior batter agreed to stay the captain till the BCCI finds a successor.

Rohit Sharma also told the selectors that he will fully support his successor and only after that, it was decided that the right-hander will be leading the team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, only after that the selectors will be looking after that candidate who can take the team forward.
The fresh set of reports of Dainik Jagran, however, claimed that that coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee identified Rohit Sharma's captaincy replacement. But both the parties were on different pages related to their choices.
The common thought in the meeting was that Jasprit Bumrah would be handed the captaincy of the India National Cricket Team. But selectors and the head coach Gautam Gambhir were aware of the challenges that might come while making the pacer captain, especially his injury issues along with the workload management.

Hence, it was decided that there is a need to have a strong vice-captain who could lead the team in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah when there are workload-related issues. While the selectors were in favor of giving the role to Rishabh Pant, head coach Gautam Gambhir backed Yashasvi Jaiswal to take the role.
Rishabh Pant has been one of the consistent performers for India National Cricket Team in the Test cricket. The keeper-batter has played several match-winning knocks for the team and also had a fair amount of leadership experience.
India likely to follow the same template as that of Australia; Jasprit Bumrah to lead in ODIs and Tests with a strong vice-captain
Apart from leading the team in IPL, he also has captained the Delhi team in domestic cricket and also led India during the T20I series against South Africa in 2022. Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the other hand, is still in the early part of his career and doesn't have captaincy experience.
The reports claimed that the India National Cricket Team are likely to follow the same template as that of the Australia National Cricket Team. Jasprit Bumrah will be leading the team in the Tests and ODIs provided that selectors pick a "strong vice-captain who can lead when Bumrah takes rest, as it happens in Australia with Pat Cummins."
