While Glenn Phillips has not had much to do with the bat in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, the New Zealand allrounder has made sure to make his presence felt by doing well with the ball.

In New Zealand’s tournament opener against England, he did not get the chance to bat as unbeaten centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway powered them to a 9-wicket win. But in that game, he managed to do well with the ball. The part-time spinner clean-bowled Joe Root and Moeen Ali and finished with figures of 2 for 17 off 3 overs.

In the second game which was against the Netherlands, he had the chance to do well with the bat but he failed and could only manage to score 4 runs. With the ball, he bowled two overs for 11 and could not pick up any wickets.

Glenn Phillips bowls a bizarre no-ball:

On Friday (October 13), Glenn Phillips once again proved his worth with the ball by taking a wicket on his very first delivery in the ongoing game against Bangladesh. After losing three wickets, Bangladesh were hoping to get their innings back on track when New Zealand captain Glenn Phillips was introduced in the attack.

And on the very first delivery, the part-time spinner made Najmul Hossain Shanto miscue his shot before Devon Conway took a fine catch. In his very next over, the Kiwi star bowled a bizarre no-ball. After he delivered his second ball of the over, the umpire signaled it a no-ball much to everyone’s surprise as he had neither overstepped nor bowled above the waist height.

The replays then showed that Glenn Philipps had knocked the bails off with his foot just before delivering the ball. As per the laws of the game, a ball is deemed no-ball:

“If the ball is delivered and if the non-striker is not dismissed under Law 41.16 (Non-striker leaving his/her ground early), either umpire shall call and signal No ball if the bowler breaks the wicket at any time after the ball comes into play and before completion of the stride after the delivery stride. This shall include any clothing or other object that falls from his/her person and breaks the wicket.”
