New Zealand has appointed former Pakistan head coach and spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as the assistant coach for their Pakistan tour.

Mushtaq had stepped down from his interim head coach of Pakistan National Team in January 2023 after serving the post for 16 months. Under his term as the coach, his national side reached the semi-final and final of two T20 World Cups respectively and bungled what was considered a relatively easy ride to the World Test Championship final.

“I am currently in the United States and will join the NZ squad upon my return on April 12,” he said.

This is supposed to be a short-term appointment by New Zealand Cricket (NZC). Mushtaq will be with the team for their upcoming 5 match T20 and 5 match ODI series in Pakistan.

Pakistan had appointed Abdur Rehman as the interim coach for the 3 match T20 series against Afghanistan. This was the first series the Men in Green lost to their neighbors to the West. Ex-pacer Umar Gul was the bowling coach for that series.

It is reported that PCB will appoint South African Mickey Arthur as their head coach next. While Grant Bradburn is reported to be the assistant coach, Morne Morkel and Andrew Puttick would be the bowling and batting coach respectively.

New Zealand’s schedule ahead of the ODI World Cup later this year

New Zealand have a busy summer season ahead of appearing in the ODI World Cup in India in October-November.

NZ are currently on a tour to Sri Lanka. Having won the ODI series 2-0 (knocking Sri Lanka out of automatic qualification for the world cup), they will face the Lankan Lions in a 3-match T20 series.

They will then travel to Pakistan in April, where 5 matches long ODI and T20 series await.

Nothing has been scheduled for much of May, June, July, and August. It is expected that they will play a few ODI series in that time to get some practice in for the World Cup.

In September, the Black Caps will tour England for a 4 T20 and 4 ODI series each. This is expected to be their final tour before coming to India for the World Cup in October.
