Former India spinner, Pragyan Ojha has picked Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Kane Williamson to lead the Chennai Super Kings from next season onwards.
In all likelihood, the ongoing IPL 2021 would be the last hurrah for MS Dhoni considering he will be past 40 next year and doesn’t play either international or domestic cricket. Hence, the Super Kings would be looking for a replacement of the Ranchi-born in the mega-auction for the next season.
MS Dhoni has led CSK to three IPL titles – and the team has emerged as a strong contender for their fourth this season, as they lead the points table with 5 consecutive wins after an early loss. He has a win percentage of over 60 leading the Yellow Army and has missed the playoffs only once.
There’s one guy who can do it, it’s Kane Williamson: Pragyan Ojha
The names of Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina are also being thrown in the hat to lead CSK from next year. But if one is to believe Pragyan Ojha it would be the New Zealand skipper to replace ‘Thala’ at the helm.
When David Warner was banned for his ball-tampering involvement in South African, it was Kane Williamson who led the Sunrirsers Hyderabad to the final of the 2018 IPL – but lost to CSK in the final. He then took his country to the final of the 2019 World Cup – they lost to England by a whisker.
Pragyan Ojha reckons Jadeja could be the vice-captain owing to his seniority at CSK and experience, but, if Dhoni isn’t there next year, then the former off-spinner sees no one but Williamson leading the CSK.
“He (Ravindra Jadeja) can be a vice-captain where if you need some help then can be your guy. But if you’re talking about captaincy, then if there’s one guy who can do it, it’s Kane Williamson. He isn’t being utilized much there (at SRH).
“Mega-auction is next year, if MS Dhoni is playing then this question shouldn’t arise in the first place. However, if he doesn’t play then you can bring in Kane Williamson as a captain,” the 34-year-old told Cricbuzz.
