A few days after the BCCI’s announcement of the second phase of IPL 2021 shifting to the UAE, Australia’s star pacer Pat Cummins was rumoured to miss the same. The BCCI had to postpone IPL 2021 indefinitely in the first week of May after 29 matches since four franchises reported a handful of COVID-19 positive cases. But sources close to Pat Cummins have confirmed there is no word yet on his participation.
Pat Cummins joined the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020 as the costliest player in the IPL auction, fetching a mind-boggling INR 15.5 crores. The 27-year old performed reasonably well in the UAE last year and hence, got retained by the franchise ahead of the 14th edition. He was the highest wicket-taker for the Knight Riders in IPL 2021, while the 14th season also saw his rise as a hard-hitting batsman. After IPL 2021’s suspension, the Australian contingent travelled to the Maldives and spent 14 days more at the quarantine in Sydney before reuniting with their families.
The BCCI already faces the trouble of the unavailability of various foreign players. England Cricket Board director Ashley Giles strongly indicated that their players would not be allowed to participate in IPL during their resting period from the bio-bubble. Australian players’ participation also remain under the cloud due to their busy international summer, with Cricket Australia wanting to keep their players fresh for the same.
