Sanju Samson has been India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman and opener in T20I cricket for quite some time, but will now have to fight gloveman Jitesh Sharma for a place in the playing XI.

This is because Shubman Gill has returned to T20I cricket for the Asia Cup and has been named as the vice-captain, which guaranteed him a place as an opener alongside Abhishek Sharma, who the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed is India's first-choice T20I opener.

Sanju Samson, who performed well as an opener for India and smashed several T20I tons, might have to bat in the middle-order, where he doesn't have good numbers, as compared to Jitesh Sharma, who thrives as a finisher.

Samson would have hoped to impress the team management in the nets to make his case strong for selection, but unfortunately, the wicketkeeper-batsman has faced some fitness issues.

According to RevSportz, Sanju Samson was spotted limping in pain during India's practice session at ICC Academy on Saturday, September 6. He was in visible discomfort while taking throwdowns, and this comes as a massive blow for the wicketkeeper-batsman.

Indian players undergo the Bronco test in a practice session

Another notable development coming out of India's practice session was the players pushing through the Bronco drill as part of their warm-up preparations.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently introduced the Bronco test as a new fitness benchmark for Indian cricketers.

This happened after Adrian le Roux joined as the new strength and conditioning coach. The Bronco test will complement the existing Yo-Yo test and 2-kilometre time trial to assess the fitness of the players.

It is a high-intensity aerobic endurance test originally designed for rugby and involves shuttle runs over 20 metres, 40 metres, and 60 metres.

One set includes running all three distances, then the player repeats the set five times continuously, totaling 1,200 metres with no rest.

I think it's a great group - Shubman Gill

Speaking in a video shared on the BCCI.tv, the India National Cricket Team Test skipper Shubman Gill said that he is excited to return to the T20I setup and be a part of the great group. He stated:

"Very excited obviously, I think it's a great group and the way we've been playing in the T20s has just been nothing short of entertaining, terrific cricket, so very excited to join the group."

Meanwhile, the premier left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh said that the atmosphere is very lively in the setup. He said:

"It's a very lively atmosphere, a lot of fun is going on and it's Day 1, we'll get into it a bit now, we'll have full intensity till the first match."
