Veteran allrounder Shakib Al Hasan dropped a regulation catch of Akash Deep to deny Taskin Ahmed a well-deserved wicket. Shakib dropped the catch during the morning session of Day 2 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai.

During the fifth ball of the 85th over of India's first innings, Taskin Ahmed bowled a short-of-a-length ball to Akash Deep, who tried to heave the ball away towards the midwicket region.

However, the ball hit the upper part of Akash's bat and went high in the air. Fielder Shakib Al Hasan ran back from square leg but and tried to catch the ball. But he never settled under it and looked uncomfortable.

The left-hander tried to catch the ball over his shoulder but eventually spilled it. The ball was in the air for a long time and Shakib had enough time to get under it. But in the end, bowler Taskin Ahmed was left disappointed.

It is not the first time that Shakib Al Hasan has dropped a catch off Taskin Ahmed's bowling in this match. On Day 1, Rishabh Pant partially pulled a short of a length ball by Taskin towards the square leg region.

But Shakib initially misjudged the ball and despite making a full effort in the end, was not able to reach it as the ball bounced just before him. Fortunately for Shakib, Pant was dismissed for 39 after some overs.

The dropped catch of Akash Deep did not prove to be too costly as he could add only 8 more runs to his tally. It was Taskin Ahmed who later went on to take his wicket when he skied an uppish drive to mid-off.

Bangladesh bowlers shine on Day 2

Meanwhile, India started Day 2 cautiously but soon lost Ravindra Jadeja for his overnight score of 86. Jadeja was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed. Akash Deep tried to play his shots but was out for 17.

Centurion Ravichandran Ashwin could not score much on the second day and was dismissed for a well-made 113 on his home ground. It wasn't the best shot from Ashwin who tried to play an attacking shot but Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto ran back from mid-off to take a fine catch.

Hasan Mahmud picks up a five-wicket haul

Fittingly, it was Hasan Mahmud who finished off the things with the final wicket of Jasprit Bumrah. Hasan Mahmud finished with brilliant figures of 5-83 in 22.2 overs and was easily the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh.

The first day of the Test match went India's way despite Bangladesh bowlers' splendid performance in the first two sessions. The bowlers made full use of the seam and bounce on offer and restricted India to 144-6 at one point.

But Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja turned things around in the last session of the day and formed a match-turning partnership to help India take the advantage.
