Shikhar Dhawan Achieves Unique Record After Completing 1000 Runs Against Sri Lanka In ODIs

India’s 25th ODI captain Shikhar Dhawan led the Indian team of the first time onto the field against Sri Lanka in the first ODI on July 18, 2021, and made the occasion special by becoming the fastest to complete 1,000 runs in one-day internationals against Sri Lanka in terms of innings.
The match was played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo which will also host the second and third ODI on July 20 and 23 respectively. The ground will then play host to the three T20I matches which will be played on July 25, 27, and 29. Shikhar Dhawan will be leading the Indian team in T20Is also.

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan, on his ODI captaincy debut, lost the toss and had to bowl first. Sri Lanka couldn’t do much with the bat with batsmen getting starts and then getting out. New Lankan ODI captain Dasun Shanaka, also on his ODI captaincy debut, scored 39, while Charith Asalanka made 38 and opener Avishka Fernando made 33.
However, the knock of the Sri Lankan innings came from all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne, who made 43* in 35 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes, both coming off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the last over.
Shikhar Dhawan Creates A World Record
In reply, India team openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan came out all guns blazing with Shaw making 43 in just 24 balls with 9 fours to his name and put 58 runs in 5.3 overs with Dhawan. As Dhawan played anchor, no.3 batsman and debutant Ishan Kishan announced his arrival with a six off the first ball he faced in ODIs, that too on his birthday, and scored 59 in 42 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes to his name.

Meanwhile, Dhawan nudged the runs around and in the process completed 1000 ODI runs against Sri Lanka. In fact, he broke Hashim Amla’s record of being the fastest in terms of ODI innings to reach the milestone, making 1,000 runs in just 17 innings against the island nation.
