Shubman Gill Could Be Tested In The Middle Order For Sri Lanka Series - Reports
Indian opener Shubman Gill might well be included in India’s squad for the home series against Sri Lanka where he could be tested in the middle-order, according to reports.
Senior batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been downright disappointing and their places in the side have been questioned for quite a while. Their failure in the 3-match Test series against South Africa could well mean the end of the road for the duo.
With Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari waiting in the ranks as well, the selectors might be keen on testing the young blood. Straying from a batter’s usual position could prove to be tough but Gill has the technique and temperament cut out for doing so.
Shubman Gill’s attacking mindset could benefit middle-order
Another factor that could work in Gill’s favour is he could be facing the softened ball instead of the new ball. This means that batting is quite easier and his attacking mindset could mean there is always the possibility of a counter-attack.
However, it becomes a three-way contest between Gill, Iyer, and Vihari. While the latter takes the cake when it comes to Test match temperament, the other two have the aggressive route they can rely upon whenever the Indian team finds itself in a hole.
Currently, Gill is nursing an injury he sustained during the home series against New Zealand. If he can recover quickly enough before Sri Lanka comes to visit, the selectors could try him out in the middle-order.
