The South Africa National Cricket Team suffered a huge setback in the middle of the crucial second ODI against the India National Cricket Team, as Nandre Burger suddenly broke down mid-over, leaving the visitors shaken at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.

The drama unfolded right after Virat Kohli hit a short-of-a-length ball through the covers for a single against Nandre Burger. Just moments later, Burger walked back to start his run-up again, and everything went wrong. Burger lost his run-up twice, and the discomfort was clear on his face.

Within seconds, Nandre Burger began hobbling on the pitch and looked uncomfortable landing on his right leg, and then suddenly clutched his right knee. The South African physio rushed in as Burger was in visible pain. This setback comes at a terrible time for the touring side.

After a quick check, Burger, who had only recently returned from a long injury break, eventually walked off the field with the team physio and could not complete his 39th against India. Later, Proteas captain Temba Bavuma had no choice but to call Aiden Markram to finish the over.

Nandre Burger faces a possible hamstring setback

This injury could be a tough one for both Nandre Burger and South Africa, as reports suggested the problem could be linked to the bowler’s hamstring or even his lower back—the same area where he had suffered a stress fracture that kept him out of action for nearly nine months.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Burger is undergoing assessments, but early checks suggest that the Proteas bowler may have suffered an injury in his right hamstring in the immediate term. This injury will affect South Africa's plans, as Kagiso Rabada is also ruled out with a rib issue.

Notably, before leaving the field, Burger bowled 6.1 overs, giving away 43 runs while dismissing Rohit Sharma for 14 in the ongoing second ODI against India in Raipur. Marcon Jansen was their standout bowler with two wickets, including the key wicket of centurion Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad power India to a massive 358/5 in Raipur ODI

Meanwhile, India posted 358/5 on the board after being asked to bat first by South Africa in the second ODI in Raipur. Virat Kohli scored a brilliant 102 off 93 balls, while Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed 105 off 83 deliveries.

KL Rahul (66*) also notched up his second consecutive fifty, while Ravindra Jadeja played a valuable knock of 24 unbeaten runs off 27 balls against the Proteas side.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma fell for 14 and Yashasvi Jaiswal for 22, while Washington Sundar was run out for 1 by Corbin Bosch. For South Africa, Jansen scalped two wickets, while Burger and Lungi Ngidi each scalped one wicket against India in the ongoing second ODI in Raipur.

The hosts have already won the Ranchi thriller by successfully defending 349 runs, and now they have a great chance to seal the ongoing three-match ODI series in Raipur. Chasing 359 runs in Raipur won’t be easy at all for the touring side, thanks to the dew factor at night.
