Suresh Raina Receives Support From Kirti Azad Over His Brahmin Identity Comment During TNPL Commentary Stint

Former India batsman Suresh Raina found himself in hot water after his Brahmin identity comment while commentating in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2021) edition. However, amidst the uproar, Raina has received support from former India player Kirti Azad, who said why so much opposition of a simple comment.

Suresh Raina, who is one of the pillars of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK), was doing commentary in the ongoing edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2021). During the commentary stint, was asked how he has adapted to the Chennai culture so easily and the left-handed batsman cited the common ground of his Brahmin heritage, which helped him assimilate with culture in Chennai.

1983 World Cup Winner Kirti Azad Supports Suresh Raina In Brahmin Comment Controversy

During the TNPL 2021 opener game between Lyca Kovai Kings and Salem Spartans in Chennai, Raina was invited to join the commentary, where he had mentioned his Brahmin caste in reply to being asked the reason how he blends into the Chennai culture.

In the viral video, Raina heard saying: “I think, I am also Brahmin. I have been playing since 2004 in Chennai, I love the culture… I love my teammates. I have played with Anirudha Srikanth, Badri (Subramaniam Badrinath), Bala Bhai (L Balaji)… I think you need to learn something good from there. We have a good administration, we have the license to explore ourselves. I love the culture there, and I’m lucky to be part of CSK. Hopefully, we will play more matches there.”

However, this comment didn’t go down too well with cricket fans on Twitter and many called out the 2011 World Cup-winning batsman over his comments. He was criticized for showing his caste pride with many fans saying they have lost respect for the cricketer.

However, 1983 World Cup winner Kirti Azad has come in support of Suresh Raina as he took to Twitter where he posted that even he was a Brahmin and could not understand what the outrage was all about.

“I am also a Brahmin, what’s the objection’, he tweeted.

Azad received both good and bad responses on social media for his stand. Meanwhile, Raina will be seen playing for CSK in the second half of the IPL 2021 edition which will take place in UAE in September.
