Suryakumar Kumar could still make a comeback and represent the Indian National Cricket Team even after being dropped from the T20I format. Unceremoniously, the Men's selection committee named Shreyas Iyer as India captain for the T20I format, replacing Suryakumar Yadav.

It was a shocking move by the selectors as Suryakumar led the team for the 2026 T20 World Cup title. Earlier, it was reported that the team management and selectors were not happy about Suryakumar Yadav's off-form of the Mumbai-born.

Suryakumar Yadav could make a return with Team India

It was said that due to his long-standing off-form, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel snubbed him from the team. He was dropped from India's tour of the UK, where the team suffered a 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland and a 4-0 defeat against England, under the leadership of the newly appointed skipper Shreyas Iyer.

According to the latest report, amid India's recent setbacks in T20I, Suryakumar Yadav has an opportunity to make a stride back into the team if he can score a significant number of runs in domestic cricket.

Vipul Kashyap, an ANI reporter, claims on 'X', "Doors for Surya still open; he is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently: source."

Why was Suryakumar Yadav dropped from the team?

Suryakumar's difficult time with the bat led to the snub months after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup. In the tournament, too, the middle-order batter remained mostly off-colour. He looked in good touch in the tournament during India's opening match of the tournament against the USA cricket team.

Against the USA cricket team, the Men in Blue were surprisingly under pressure, losing early wickets. At the moment when most of the batters in the line-up were dismissed cheaply, Suryakumar made the difference by scoring 84 off 49. The match was on February 7 this year.

Since the 84-run knock, he has failed to produce anything significant with the bat. Whether for Team India or the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, Suryakumar struggled to regain his form. As he was far from his best with the bat, the selectors dropped him from the national side.

Will Suryakumar Yadav follow in the footsteps of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma?

As Suryakumar Yadav is out of the national cricket team, the star batter will have to prove himself in domestic cricket. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) previously mentioned that every cricketer would have to take part in domestic cricket with their respective state teams.

In the previous season, top-tier talents like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma featured for Delhi and Mumbai cricket teams, respectively, during the initial stage of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. If Suryakumar wants to retain his spot in Team India, then he will have to do the same.
