T20 Cricket Likely To Be Included In 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games: Reports

T20 cricket is expected to be a part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games as per reports in The Guardian. Cricket itself is making a comeback into the Olympics 128 years later since its first appearance.

Sources close to the Guardian say that the inclusion of cricket is very likely in the Los Angeles Olympics. Men’s and women’s T20 teams will fight it out for the gold medal by playing some intense matches.

Five men’s and women’s teams are likely to participate with their qualifications based on the ICC T20I rankings. It would be the first Olympic cricket witnessed since a one-off gold medal match in the 1900 Games in Great Britain.

T20 Cricket Likely To Make Its Olympics Debut

The International Olympic Committee is likely to get a huge incentive with cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics. Cricket is one of the nine shortlisted sporting events in the competition alongside baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash, and motorsport.

This would also materialize ICC’s stance on taking cricket to the global level as a game after women’s T20 cricket was a part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

England are likely to play as Team Great Britain if cricket is eventually included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic games. For the Commonwealth Games in 2022, West Indies earned qualification through the rankings and were represented by Barbados following a regional qualifier.

With Major League Cricket already a superhit in the US, cricket’s involvement in the Olympics is only going to help the game evolve in the country allowing many more people to take up the sport professionally.

Cricket has also made an entry into the Asian Games 2023 with the top Asian men’s and women’s sides playing in the tournament. India will be sending men’s and women’s teams as well. The men’s event will comprise 18 teams while the women’s event will have 14 teams. The women’s competition will start on September 19 and end with the gold and bronze medal matches on September 26.
