Tamim Iqbal has launched a scathing attack on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) while hailing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its remarkable achievements in recent years.
His comments come during a crucial phase when the Bangladesh cricket team seeks to regain its footing on the global stage after a series of disappointing performances in major tournaments.
Bangladesh's journey has seen its share of highs and lows, especially after their thrilling campaigns in the 2015 ODI World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy—they reached the knockouts in both mega-events.
Bangladesh star Tamim Iqbal urges BCB to emulate BCCI's success formula
However, the team has since struggled to maintain that momentum, raising concerns about its preparations for upcoming marquee events. With Faruque Ahmed recently stepping into the role of BCB president, becoming the first board chief to have played for Bangladesh, the expectation for a renewed focus on strategic planning is high.
And Tamim emphasized the need for a cohesive vision among the cricketing hierarchy, stressing that success begins at the top. The former Bangladesh captain has pointed out that while players and coaches are driven by the desire to clinch trophies, it is equally important for the board to share that ambition.
Drawing a comparison with the BCCI, Tamim Iqbal highlighted how a strong administrative framework is essential for achieving continued success. He showered rich praise on India’s cricketing system.
Tamim Iqbal further made the bold comment, saying that big stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would not have been that successful, and Team India would not achieved the success they had if the BCCI had not been that strong. So, Tamim Iqbal wants the BCB to follow in the footsteps of the BCCI to revive their game.
Tamim Iqbal urges patience with the new BCB President
Acknowledging the legacy of previous BCB administrations, Tamim Iqbal called for patience as the new leadership finds its footing. He admitted the progress made under the past administration, but now he called for accountability in the current setup.
Tamim Iqbal was quoted as saying by Sportstar: “The people at the top need to have a clear plan in terms of what they want to achieve. The captain wants to win the trophy, and the coach wants to win the trophy, but the question is, does the board want it too? In India, you can praise Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as much as you can, but had the BCCI not been that strong, the team wouldn’t have achieved so much.”
Tamim signed off by saying, “Look, there are ifs and buts to it. In the previous BCB regime, there were three former captains involved in the administration. Did the last board do everything wrong? No, they also did a lot of good things; you cannot deny that. I might have had issues with two or three people at the BCB, but that does not mean that they don’t have any achievements. This time, the president is also a cricketer, so you have to give him a certain period of time and then judge.”
