"There's Guys From The Outside Who Could Come In And Have A Big Impact" - Aaron Finch Names Australia’s Next T20I Captain

Australia T20I captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the shorter format on Tuesday, February 7, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The right-handed batsman had earlier retired from ODI cricket in September 2022. Finch led Australia to their first T20 World Cup title in the UAE in 2021.
The opening batsman struggled with the bat last year, and his position came under scrutiny after Australia failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at home. Australia’s most successful captain in the history of T20I cricket last represented his country on home soil during the marquee event.

The new captain will take charge later this year, with the team’s next match in the T20I format scheduled for August 2023. Australia’s next T20I captaincy selection is important with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 taking place in the Caribbean and USA.
Steve Smith Has Done It Before And Done A Great Job – Aaron Finch
Speaking to reporters at the MCG, Aaron Finch suggested that Cricket Australia (CA) have many captaincy options to choose from and could look to either Travis Head or Ashton Turner as his T20 captaincy successor.
“There’s plenty of guys who can do it. Obviously, Steve Smith has done it before and done a great job, Pat Cummins, I doubt whether he would want to do it with such a big workload,” Finch told reporters.
“But there are guys from the outside who could come in and have a big impact. Travis Head, and Ashton Turner, these types of guys are experienced, they know how to win as well, so whichever way they go, the team is in great hands. I probably lean toward a white-ball player more than anything. To be able to focus on two formats as opposed to three I think will be important,” he added.
Aaron Finch represented Australia in five Tests, 146 ODIs, and 103 T20Is. He led the national team in 76 men’s T20Is as well as 55 ODIs. The 36-year-old is the leading scorer for Australia in the shorter format with 3120 runs at an average of 34.25 and a strike rate of 142.53. He had the record for the highest individual score in T20Is, scoring 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018.
