Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has reacted to the recent comments made by former India head coach Ravi Shastri on Virat Kohli’s legacy as a Test captain.

Virat Kohli had stepped down as India’s Test captain just after the Test series defeat in South Africa and Shastri had stated that Kohli could have led India for 2 more years but he would have won a lot of matches and many people wouldn’t have been able to digest that fact.

“Whether Virat could have continued to lead India in Tests. For sure, he could have led India for at least 2 years because next two years India would be playing at home and who is coming over – 9 and 10 jacks, going by the rankings. But he would have then made it to 50-60 wins under his captaincy and a lot of people will not be able to digest that fact,” Shastri said on India Today.

Meanwhile, Harbhajan said that he is not aware of the fact to whom the former India coach is referring. He added that he and other Indian fans would have definitely been extremely proud if Kohli won more matches.

“This is a big statement – Ravi Shastri saying that people wouldn’t have digested it had Virat Kohli won another 15-20 Test matches and enhanced his legacy as India’s most successful captain. I don’t know who he is talking about, who wouldn’t have digested it but we Indians would have been extremely proud of it. We would have wished he won another 40 and create a record that another Indian captain would have needed to captain twice to match it,” Harbhajan said on Sports Tak.

With Rahul Dravid as coach, I don’t think India would play on surfaces where the ball would spin from the 1st over – Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan opined that the results of the matches played in India cannot be pre-determined despite Kohli having a sensational record as a skipper. Former Indian spinner also believes that the Indian team, under head coach Rahul Dravid won’t play on the surfaces, where the ball will turn from the first over.

The matches that are to take place in India, you cannot pre-determine that their outcomes will go in your favour. Yes, you had some great series where you were extremely successful, but going forward, whether Kohli would have won those matches is something only time would have told. With Rahul Dravid as coach, I don’t think India would play on surfaces where the ball would spin from the first over. In fact, I feel there will be pitches where batters too would get a fair chance to prove themselves,” Harbhajan pointed out.

Harbhajan Singh further pinpointed that the performances of Indian batsmen have gone down in the last few years.

Also, in the last two three years, if you are to take out statistics of Indian batters, you would see that perhaps they don’t know how to score runs. Our batters have forgotten how to score runs. The confidence of batters are down because they don’t have much runs in the last 2-3 years. And when there aren’t runs, players are under pressure. You are winning series at home but your players aren’t growing.”
