Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, has said that the 33-year-old has decided to step down as India’s Test captain “after a lot of thinking”.
On 15th January 2022, Virat Kohli shocked the cricketing world with his announcement regarding relinquishing the Test captaincy. Previously, Kohli had also relinquished the T20I captaincy and was removed from ODI captaincy because the BCCI selectors did not want to have two white-ball captains in the team.

Speaking on YouTube show Khelneeti, Sharma said that Kohli doesn’t want to get involved in any controversies and he just wants to enjoy his game. He elaborated:
“Virat Kohli has taken the decision to relinquish the Test captaincy after a lot of thinking. He wants to enjoy his game and move on from here. He does not want to be in any controversy or indulge in any politics.”
I don’t think anybody felt the need to ask Virat Kohli to continue – Rajkumar Sharma
Sharma revealed that nobody from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stopped Kohli from stepping down as Test captain as it was his personal choice to relinquish Test captaincy. He said:
“Nobody stopped Virat from resigning. Everybody accepted his decision, considering it was his personal choice to step down. I don’t think anybody felt the need to ask him to continue.”
“He is quite relaxed and wants to concentrate on his game. It is good for the team if he is relaxed, as then he will be able to contribute more.”
