In the first ODI, Ashton Agar preserved five crucial runs for Australia with an outstanding display of fielding on the Adelaide Oval boundary, hauling in a sure six from Dawid Malan.
The first of a three-match ODI series between the Pat Cummins-led team and England is being played on Thursday. After winning the toss, Australia asked England to open the batting.
Dawid Malan Steadies England After Australia Makes Early Breakthrough
Phil Salt, Jason Roy, and James Vince were unable to contribute significantly as England lost the first three wickets for 31 runs.
The wickets continued to fall from the other end while Malan held his ground from one end. Sam Billings was unable to contribute significantly, and Jos Buttler tried to contribute but only managed to score 29 runs.
Malan is recovering from a groin injury, but he showed he is more than just a T20 basher by playing a responsible knock. On Adam Zampa’s delivery, he scored his century in just 107 balls, giving England some ammunition going into the contest.
Ashton Agar Saves 5 Runs With Magical Athleticism In The Field
Malan demonstrated that he can speed up the innings in the ODI format as well after reaching his century and began tossing the bowlers.
On the last ball of the 45th over, Malan tried to smash one over the cow corner, but sheer athleticism by Ashton Agar saved a couple of runs for the hosts, which can provide fruitful in the second innings.
Standing near the rope, Agar made a big jump, caught the ball while in the air with his left hand, and throws it back into the playing field before landing on the ground.
