It was a thriller moment when Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Shakib Al Hasan in a dramatic fashion that came with a mix of both skill and a little bad luck on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test match between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Shakib played a very planned reverse sweep to break Jadeja’s rhythm. But the Bangladesh all-rounder misjudged the ball that flicked back and popped straight up in the air, hitting his boot, and giving wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant just enough time to react.

Ravindra Jadeja’s clever bowling and Rishabh Pant’s quick reaction ended Shakib Al Hasan's resistance in the Chennai Test

Pant sprinted all the way to complete a clean catch, sealing Shakib's fate. But that drama wasn't going to end there, as the on-field umpires decided to review the catch to confirm that the ball hadn't touched the ground after hitting Shakib's boot.

After a brief discussion, it was announced that Pant’s catch was legal, as the ball went straight up without touching anything, ending Shakib’s stay on the crease in the ongoing first Test in Chennai.

Bangladesh batters fail to counter India's bowling attack

Shakib’s wicket added to Bangladesh's woes, as the ace all-rounder had been looking to anchor the innings but could contribute 32 runs from 64 balls with five boundaries against India. With his departure, the pressure mounted further on the Bangladeshi batting lineup, leaving them in a precarious position.

They are currently reeling at 112/8 against India in the ongoing Chennai Test. Earlier, in the match, Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep rattled Bangladesh’s top-order as the duo scalped five wickets together to put their innings out of the track in Chennai.

Jadeja also scalped two wickets so far, with Mohammed Siraj impressing with one wicket. Shakib’s 32 is presently the highest score from the touring party in the ongoing opening Test of the two-match Test series against India.

Bangladesh's move to bowl first in the Chennai Test backfired?

It seems that the Tigers have made the big mistake to ask India to bat first in their own conditions after winning the toss at the Chepauk Stadium. It is the ninth time when a visiting team decided to bowl first in a Test match in India.

In the last eight encounters, six ended in a draw, while Australia won the rest of the two games while fielding first in India. They had defeated India by convincing 10-wicket margins in those matches, first at Wankhede Stadium in 2001 and then at Eden Gardens in 1969.

The last time was in a draw against Sri Lanka in a rain-curtailed affair at Eden Gardens in 2017. But the West Indies had decided to bowl first against Afghanistan in Lucknow in 2019 and won the game by nine wickets. So, all the factors are in favor of India winning the Chennai Test against the Tigers.

Ashwin's century takes India to 376 in the first innings

On the other hand, India posted 376 runs on the board in the first innings thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin’s century and brilliant fifties from Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the ongoing Test against Bangladesh in Chennai.
