Renne Ferguson, who is the woman at the centre of the Tim Paine sexting scandal, is all set to face trial over allegations that she stole cash and memberships from Cricket Tasmania.

Ferguson was allegedly sexually harassed by four employees of Cricket Tasmania including the former Australia National Cricket Team Test skipper Tim Paine. After this matter, which originally took place in 2017, became public, then-captain Paine stepped down from Australia’s Test captaincy, just half a month before the marquee Ashes 2021-2022.

A fresh Federal Court matter involving Renne Ferguson has come to light and she is alleged to have stolen thousands of dollars and taken out Cricket Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes memberships without paying for them, as per a report in The Sydney Morning Herald.

On Thursday, Ferguson appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court via video link from her car and told the court she wanted to maintain her plea of not guilty, which was made about 63 counts of stealing and 2 counts of dishonestly obtaining a financial benefit. Also, she revealed that she has parted ways with a high-profile lawyer, Greg Barns SC, who had been representing her.

“[I am] looking to appoint new legal representation,” she was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Meanwhile, Magistrate Michael Daly said that he was prepared to sentence Ferguson had she changed her plea to guilty. He adjourned the matter until the 5th of August and ordered Ferguson to get fully engaged and appear in court.

“[I’m] not prepared to deal with this remotely any longer. You will need to be fully engaged from this point on,” he said. “There is a lot of work now that needs to be done. We need to commence preparation for this case for a trial.

“There is no point in you instructing lawyers that can’t be here. You need to appreciate the reality of your position at present.”
